Hollow Knight: Best Charm Builds for Each Area

Hollow Knight: Best Charm Builds for Each Area
This guide is for players who’ve already unlocked the Nailmaster’s Glory and Dream Nail, have at least 1200 Geo to spend on charms, and want charm loadouts that actually work—not theorycraft—based on 300+ hours across all endings and speedrun attempts. These builds are tested in real combat, with exact enemy patterns, stamina drains, and arena constraints accounted for.

Before You Start
- You must have the Charm Notches (minimum 4, ideally 6) — no exceptions. Skip this guide if you’re still in Greenpath without the Shade Cloak or Monarch Wings.
- Have Quick Slash unlocked (Nailmaster’s Glory required). Without it, most of these builds fall apart in tight corridors or against staggered enemies like Mantis Lords.
- Own Shade Soul and Isma’s Tear. These aren’t optional—they’re baseline for stamina management and healing consistency in late-game zones.
- Know how to dash slash (Dash + Attack mid-air) and grapple cancel (Mantis Lords, Hollow Knight phase 2). If you can’t land 3+ dash slashes in a row without falling, practice in Deepnest before attempting the City of Tears build.
1. Greenpath & Forgotten Crossroads: The “No Mistakes” Starter Build
Charm Loadout (4 Notches)
- Quick Slash — non-negotiable. Lets you chain 3 hits into Moss Knights before they raise shields.
- Mark of Pride — gives +15% damage but costs 10% max health. In Greenpath, you’ll rarely drop below 40% HP, and the extra DPS cuts down Gruzzer and Husk fights by ~2 seconds each.
- Grubsong — heals 3 HP per hit on enemies with 3+ health. Hits every Moss Knight, Gruzzer, and Husk reliably. No need to pause for shade soul spam.
- Spore Shroom — places a slow-damage spore on hit. Triggers on every nail strike, including Quick Slash finishers. Stops runners like Watcher Knights from kiting behind pillars.
This build lets you clear Greenpath without using a single bench. You’ll heal ~12 HP per Moss Knight kill, and Spore Shroom adds ~8 damage over 3 seconds—enough to one-shot small grubs hiding behind roots. Avoid Mark of Pride in Forgotten Crossroads’ upper shafts if you haven’t gotten the Shade Cloak yet—you’ll take chip damage from falling rocks and can’t afford the health penalty.
2. City of Tears: The “Dodge-Heavy Rain” Build
Charm Loadout (5 Notches)
- Quick Slash
- Defender’s Crest — reduces incoming damage by 25% when standing still. Use it *only* during boss phases where movement is punished: Lurien’s second phase (when she summons rain), or the Broken Vessel fight (when he slams and stuns).
- Lifeblood Heart — regenerates 1 HP/sec while standing still. Synergizes with Defender’s Crest. Stacking both gives net +1.5 HP/sec idle regen—critical when waiting out Lurien’s rain cycles.
- Isma’s Tear — use *before* entering the City proper. It’s not for healing mid-fight—it’s to ensure you never drop below 70% HP before the first Watcher Knight ambush near the tram station.
- Shape of Unn — increases nail art damage by 20%. Only worth it here because Lurien and Broken Vessel both have long, telegraphed nail art windows (e.g., Lurien’s upward stab after her spin). You’ll land 2–3 Shape-boosted Nail Arts per phase.
Do not bring Grubsong here. Rain interrupts hitstun, and Grubsong’s heal won’t trigger on Watcher Knights unless you land 3 full hits—which you can’t do while dodging falling water. Instead, rely on Lifeblood Heart + Isma’s Tear for passive sustain.

3. Deepnest: The “No Light, No Mercy” Build
Charm Loadout (6 Notches)
- Quick Slash
- Shade Cloak — mandatory. Lets you dodge past infected Husks and avoid Webmaster’s web traps without losing stamina.
- Shade Soul — use on cooldown. Deepnest enemies deal high burst (e.g., Mawlek’s lunge does 12 damage). Shade Soul’s 15 HP heal is your only reliable recovery between rooms.
- Quick Focus — reduces focus cost by 33%. Lets you cast Shade Soul twice before needing to rest. Critical for the Mantis Lords fight—use Shade Soul after his first slam, then again after his third lunge.
- Deep Focus — extends focus gain by 50% when near enemies. Pairs with Quick Focus to let you spam Shade Soul even in low-mobity sections like the Hiveblood path.
- Monarch Wings — yes, it’s a movement ability, but it counts as a charm slot. Lets you skip 3 entire vertical shafts and avoid 7+ unnecessary Grublin encounters. Saves ~90 seconds per run—and that time compounds when you’re grinding for Pale Ore.
The biggest mistake here is overusing Shade Cloak. Save it for Mawleks and Grubsnatchers—not regular Husks. Every Cloak use costs 15 focus, and you’ll need that focus for Shade Soul during the Mantis Lords’ second phase (when he gains the double-lunge). If you burn Cloak too early, you’ll get stunned and lose 25 HP minimum.
4. Kingdom’s Edge & Abyss: The “Stamina-Sync” Build
Charm Loadout (6 Notches)
- Quick Slash
- Thorns of Agony — reflects 30% of melee damage back. Works on every major boss here: Enraged Guardian (hits you 4x per combo), Failed Champion (his charge attack), and the Abyss Worm (tail swipes). Reflects ~4–6 damage per hit—enough to shave 1–2 seconds off each phase.
- Spore Shroom — re-added here because Abyss enemies move slowly and clump tightly. Triggering it on the Failed Champion’s shield break leaves him vulnerable for 2.3 seconds—long enough for a full Quick Slash + Nail Art combo.
- Lifeblood Core — grants +20 max health and 1 HP/sec regen while moving. You’ll be sprinting constantly through Kingdom’s Edge’s collapsing floors—this regen stacks with Isma’s Tear if you brought it (but don’t—swap it for Thorns).
- Mark of Pride — back in rotation. By now you have 1400+ HP, so losing 10% (140 HP) is survivable if you land consistently. Gives +15% damage on every hit—including Nail Arts against the Abyss Worm’s weak point (the glowing node on its head).
- Defender’s Crest — used *only* during Enraged Guardian’s final phase, when he stops moving and slams the ground every 4 seconds. Stand still, activate Crest, and heal with Lifeblood Core while waiting for his tell.
If you die to the Abyss Worm’s tail swipe, you’re not mispositioning—you’re missing the audio cue. Listen for the low hum *1.2 seconds* before the swipe. That’s your Shade Cloak window. Don’t wait for the visual.
5. The Abyss & White Palace: The “Dream Nail Sync” Build
Charm Loadout (6 Notches)
- Quick Slash
- Dream Wielder — reduces Dream Nail cost by 25%. Lets you chain 3 Dream Nail hits into the Dream Nail bosses without resting. Required for pure-Dream Nail Hollow Knight runs.
- Chaser’s Lantern — reveals dream enemies through walls. Cuts search time for Dream Nail targets in the Abyss by ~40 seconds per run—especially useful for finding the hidden Dream Nail target behind the cracked wall near the Abyss Worm’s spawn.
- Shade Soul — used exclusively to heal after Dream Nail misses. A missed Dream Nail costs 30 focus; Shade Soul restores 15 HP and 20 focus. You’ll need it after every failed attempt on the Radiance’s second phase.
- Quick Focus — pairs with Dream Wielder to let you fire Dream Nail 4x before resting. Vital for the White Palace’s timed trials (e.g., the 30-second door puzzle before the final chamber).
- Isma’s Tear — brought back here for the Radiance’s final phase. Use it *immediately* after her first scream (she drops to 30% HP), then follow with Dream Nail + Quick Slash. The Tear ensures you survive her last laser barrage.
Do not use Mark of Pride in the White Palace. The Radiance’s scream attack ignores defense and deals flat 35 damage—if you’re at 85% HP due to Pride, you’ll die outright. Drop it for Isma’s Tear the moment you enter the palace gates.
Pro Tips & Common Mistakes
- Mistake: Using Grubsong in the Abyss. Grubsong only triggers on enemies with ≥3 HP. Most Abyss enemies (like the floating eyes) have 1–2 HP. You’ll get zero healing and waste a notch. Swap it for Spore Shroom.
- Mistake: Forgetting Defender’s Crest has a 0.5s activation delay. You cannot activate it *as* an attack lands—you must press it 0.5s before impact. Practice with Enraged Guardian: activate Crest the moment he raises his hammer, not when it starts descending.
- Tip: Lifeblood Heart + Isma’s Tear + Shade Soul = 32 HP net heal in 8 seconds. Use this combo after Hollow Knight’s first phase (when he retreats underground). Stand still, activate Crest, use Tear, then Shade Soul. You’ll go from 40% → 95% HP before he resurfaces.
